Scouts Development Activities

Through recreation, scouting achieves its purpose of helping young people develop physically, intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Scouting is all about building confidence and self-esteem, learning important life skills and leadership skills, team building, outdoor adventure, education, and fun! Scouts learn how to make good choices and to take responsibility for their actions so that they are prepared for their adult life as independent persons.

Flag Disposition

American flags should never be thrown away. They should be collected for special disposal and treated with honor. Pack 673 collects American flags to ensure proper and honorable disposal of our nation’s flag. Special disposal includes treating each flag with dignity and respect.

Pinewood Derby

Partnered with a parent or guardian, Cub Scouts work together, strengthening bonds and building confidence – and their own custom race cars! They begin with an official Pinewood Derby Race Car kit, then create a design, then carve it from the wood block provided in the kit, and detail it with paint, decals and other accessories, and perfect strategies to compete in their pack’s own Pinewood Derby. It’s s a wonderful learning experience centered on teamwork, ingenuity and sportsmanship – all for the thrill of the race and a lifetime of great memories to share with fellow racers young and old.

Camping

Cub Scouting offers overnight camping opportunities for Cub Scouts of all ages. We organize den overnight campouts, council-organized short-term or family camps, and pack overnighters. Some of the areas where we camp are River Bend Park, Great Falls Park, and others.

Awards Ceremony

Awards ceremonies are an important part of the scouting experience to recognize achievement and advancement.  We enjoy spending time learning about each other, laughing and having fun!

Service

Doing service projects together is one way that Cub Scouts keep their promise “to help other people”.  While a Scout should do their best to help other people every day, a group service project is a bigger way to help people.  While you’re giving service, your’e learning to work together with others to do something that’s good for your community.  Service projects may help the natural world, the community, or the chartered organization.  Pack 673 participates in the are “Scouting For Food” in November and typically collects thousands of pounds of non-perishable food for Cornerstones in Reston.  Dens also adhere to the “Leave no Trace” and clean up areas that we hike and camp, etc.
